THE SEASON'S THREE MANAGERS
Stuart Murdoch was born in Blackpool on 17 August 1950.
He worked with Glenn Roeder at Watford before moving to
Wimbledon in 1996 as goalkeeping coach and was appointed
as manager in June 2002 after a successful spell as caretaker,
replacing Terry Burton, who had criticised the club's owners
over the proposed move to Milton Keynes.
Murdoch led Wimbledon to tenth in the First Division in the
2002–03 season. After the move to Milton Keynes, the club
was relegated, finishing bottom of the First Division, suffering the longest run of defeats at this level. In the summer, the club was renamed Milton Keynes Dons. Murdoch was fired in November 2004, with the club in the relegation zone of League One.
Murdoch later worked in coaching roles at Bournemouth, Norwich City, Millwall, Southampton and Gillingham.
.
Jimmy Gilligan was born in Hammersmith on 24 January 1964 and started his football career as an apprentice at Watford after joining the club at the age of 13. He went on to play for Grimsby Town, Swindon Town, Newport County (loan), Lincoln City, Cardiff City, Portsmouth and Swansea City before injury finished his league career.
He rejoined Watford as their youth coach in 1993, later becoming assistant academy director before leaving for Nottingham Forest with manager David Platt to become his reserve team manager.
He was appointed Technical Director at Wimbledon in February 2003 by Stuart Murdoch whom Gilligan had forged a friendship with from his coaching days at Watford.
With Wimbledon suffering financial difficulties and the move to Milton Keynes, Gilligan moved up the ranks at Milton Keynes Dons, becoming Assistant Manager to Murdoch. Following Murdoch's sacking in November 2004, Gilligan was placed in temporary charge until the appointment of Danny Wilson in December and left shortly afterwards.
Danny Wilson was born in Wigan on born 1 January 1960. He
started his playing career with hometown club Wigan Athletic
in the Northern Premier League, scoring once in eight
appearances before moving to Bury. He later played for
Chesterfield, Nottingham Forest, Scunthorpe United (loan),
Brighton & Hove Albion, Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday
before joining Barnsley in 1993 as player-assistant manager
and later manager.
In the summer of 1998, Wilson returned to his old club
Sheffield Wednesday as manager but was sacked the following
March. June 2000, he was appointed manager of Division
Two Bristol City on a four-year contract. He left the club at the
end of the 2003–04 season after his contract was not renewed,
having failed to achieve promotion.
In December 2004, he took over from Jimmy Gilligan as the Dons manager. In his first season, he managed to save the club from relegation – they would have gone down had it not been for a 10-point penalty imposed on Wrexham who had gone into receivership but was not so lucky the next season and he was sacked on 10 May 2006.
