A slightly different Round Up this week with very little to play for as sadly we bailed out in a whimper. The only question that needed answering was who was going to take the last playoff spot. Pompey had their destiny in their own hands but sadly for them and their demanding supporters they fell at the final fence losing 1-0 at home to Accrington Stanley courtesy of an Adam Phillips first half strike and are resigned for yet another season in League 1.
With the door wide open for a playoff spot Oxford stepped right in with a comfortable 4-0 over Burton Albion, with goals from Shodipo, Taylor, Lee, and Winnall, and they will now play Blackpool in the play offs, the Seasiders confirming their third place finish with a 1-0 victory at home to Bristol Rovers, Ellis Simms scoring the only goal of the game.
Charlton who were waiting in the wings hoping that those above them would slip up, but it was a big ask but they did everything they could to record a very good victory against the League Champions Hull City, Jacob Greaves putting the ball into his own net in the only goal of the game. Charlton finish in 7th with just goal difference separating them from Oxford United.
Plenty of games with very little significance Crewe beating Shrewsbury late on in a five goal thriller. League runners up Peterborough cruised past Doncaster Rovers 4-1 and was a disappointing end to the career of James Coppinger.
Gillingham beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in yet another dead rubber, Vadaine Oliver scoring the only goal of the game, that was his 17th of the season and he’s bound to attract some attention in the summer.
Ipswich beat Fleetwood 3-1 in yet another game with no significance, Gwion Edwards with the pick of the goals from the home side.
Sunderland grabbed a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with relegated Northampton Town, Sam Hoskins putting the Cobbler’s in front 6 minutes from time only for Carl Winchester to level things up 3 minutes later, Sunderland will now face Lincoln City in the playoffs, the Imps drawing 0-0 with AFC.
The final game of the day was a seven goal thriller that saw relegated Swindon score two goals in injury time to overcome relegation survivors Wigan 4-3.
That’s it, we won’t be covering the play offs, have a good summer hopefully we’ll see you back at the stadium in August.
