The 39,732 all seater Hillsborough Stadium (SG6 1SW) built in 1889 and is a real traditional football stadium that has seen many FA Cup semi finals including the tragic events of 1989 during the Liverpool and Notts Forest game in which 96 people died and a further 766 sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Hillsborough also hosted games in the 1966 World Cup between West Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Argentina in Group 2, and also the quarter final between West Germany and Uruguay.
As we haven’t played Wednesday for over 8 years this is likely to be a new ground for many, especially the younger generation of Dons fans.
We will be housed in the Leppings Lane End and depending on numbers we will be in the Upper Tier, but my guess is we will be in the bottom corner, but wherever we sit expect a noisy welcome from the home faithful.
The usual football ground food is available, but be warned its Championship prices here, and I’m pretty sure Wednesday intend to go cashless this season, so be warned, and what with the ticket price this is likely to be the most expensive venue of the season.
The main away pub appears to be the Railway Hotel on Penniston Road, failing that you could try the Norfolk Arms or the Red Lion, both will accept away fans.
There is a limited amount of street parking available but be warned of the dreaded residents scheme in place that could see you get a ticket or worse still get towed. There are a number of unofficial car parks along the A61 as you approach the ground priced at about £4, increasing to £7 the closer to the ground you get. Alternatively you could also park at the Meadow Hall Railway Station close to the shopping centre, its free to park, then you need to hop on one of the yellow trams that stop at the ground, it costs about £3 for a return ticket and takes about 35 minutes. Sheffield Railway Station is about 3 miles from the ground, so its either a £10 cab ride, an hour walk, or you could jump on a No 53 bus to Ecclesfield that drops of outside the ground. Again you can also jump on a tram, this time it’s a blue one that takes you to Hillsborough, from there it’s a 10 minute walk, or you could catch a yellow tram from there that drops off outside the way end.
