Once again, the games are coming thick and fast but thankfully, we can put our feet up next weekend with our scheduled game versus Plymouth Argyle cancelled as they are still competing in the FA Cup. Even though we aren’t playing we will still keep you up to date with what’s going on in League 1 with our regular round up of results as most teams have now reached the halfway point in their seasons.
So, while we were playing Fleetwood at SMK, here’s what happened in the other results on the night.
The game between Lincoln & Gillingham was called off in the morning as Sincil Bank is still having problems with a waterlogged pitch, those of you that have been before will know that Sincil Dyke & the River Witham skirts the ground, which makes is susceptible to the occasional flooding problem. The game between Blackpool & Northampton also fell foul to the weather with the game called off at 5-30pm with the Cobblers players already at the ground.
Hull 3 Accrington 0
With the game at Lincoln called off Hull had the opportunity to go top and they grabbed it with both hands comfortably dispatching Stanley 3-0. Mallik Wilks once again got on the score sheet and got the Tigers purring after some superb work from Lewis-Potter. Ten minutes into the second half they doubled their lead, Baxter in the Stanley goal parried the ball into the path of Gavin Whyte who thundered it into the roof of the net. To add insult to injury Cameron Burgess was then sent off for the visitors hauling down Jacob Greaves inside the box for his second yellow and up stepped Josh Magennis to score the penalty with his first touch of the ball.
Peterborough 2 Charlton 1
Posh turned the game on its head thanks to in form Sammy Szmodics after Conor Washington converted a penalty, Ethan Hamilton making a clumsy challenge on Jason Pearce. Jonson Clarke-Harris again the provider for both Szmodics goals to be once again the hero of the hour for the second game running.
Crewe 3 Bristol Rovers 2
Crewe move up to 5th place although most teams below them have games in hand. Charlie Kirk scored in the 4th minute to give the Railwaymen the lead and then doubled it 20 minutes later through Ryan Wintle. Rovers though put up a spirited fight to draw the scores level first through Max Ehmer who tapped in at the far post then just 4 minutes later Luke McCormick score a stunning free kick from just outside the box, but the fight back was soon derailed when Olly Lancashire scored a diving header a few minutes later.
Doncaster 1 Rochdale 0
Jon Taylor’s goal on the half hour mark was enough to seal the points for Doncasterlona against a Rochdale team that have been scoring for fun lately. Donny stay in 4th and Rochdale remain in 18th.
Portsmouth 4 AFCW 0
The icing on the cake for Dons fans was of course the drubbing that AFCW got from Pompey, that’s six League 1 clean sheets in a row for Portsmouth, six straight defeats for AFC, and one win in ten games….it breaks your heart. John Marquis started the rout just before the half hour mark after a great build up. Eight minutes later Pompey doubled their lead with the goal of the game through Ryan Williams who curled a beauty into the net after more superb approach work. With half time approaching the game was out of sight as Sean Raggett thundered a header past the stricken Sam Walker. Super Sub Ben Close compounded the misery breaking clear and firing home from just inside the box to make it 4-0.
Sunderland 1 Plymouth 2
Typical, I back the Black Cats and they lose to Argyle who recorded their first away win of the season. Sunderland had the bulk of the possession and the attempts on goal, and restricted Argyle to just three efforts, unfortunately two of them found the back of the net. Argyles opener was a superb move culminating in Adam Lewis tapping home with the Sunderland defence split wide open. Aiden O’Brien levelled just after the break and everything pointed to Sunderland taking control until five minutes later Joe Edwards left in acres of space on the edge of the box curled it into the far corner of the net to take an unlikely victory
