Walking Football and Netball

By Amanda Lansbury, EDI Officer, MKDSA

MK Dons SET over 55’s walking football and Code Breakers walking netball.

Recently here at the MKDSA, we were contacted by an MK Dons supporter Lorraine Crawford, who is a member of the MK Dons SET over 55’s walking football team and also a member of the self funded Bletchley code breakers walking netball team.

Lorraine would like to let everyone know about these fantastic sessions with a view of maybe adding some more players to their teams and both I and the MKDSA would like to encourage people to join in.

Anyone who is looking to make new friends and get some light exercise this really is a fun sport to get into, I asked Lorraine some questions to get an insight into what to expect from these sessions.

What made you choose walking football and netball?
I chose walking football and netball as they are slower versions of the sports I love and now I am older they are much more suitable for me.

How long have you been playing for?
I’ve been playing walking netball for around 5 years now and enjoy every session we have a lovely friendly group of ladies who also enjoy social occasions as well as playing the odd tournament and friendly with similar groups. I have been playing walking football for almost 2 years now and thoroughly enjoy it we have a lovely friendly group of ladies over 55 and have learnt a lot about the game through our coaches.

Can men and women join?
We welcome men and ladies over 50 or younger if disability or health means they cannot play the running sport we don’t at present have any male members though.

What advise would you give anyone thinking about joining?
I would say to anyone that is thinking about joining either group please come along. We love introducing new people to the games its enjoyable and friendly. There is absolutely no pressure and you can take things at your own pace, we all understand how daunting the first few sessions can be with all the new faces and things to remember, but everyone is more than happy to support new members for as long as they need it.

We have a catch up after our sessions and do organise social events too so do come along and make some new friends as well as getting some exercise.

Thank you for answering my questions on behalf of myself and the rest of the MKDSA would like to wish you the best of luck in finding new players and best wishes to the rest of the team.
