IN FOCUS BURTON ALBION

I don’t think I’m being unkind when I say things for Burton Albion have been pretty desperate. Their only wins this season have come against Accrington Stanley and Charlton which is surprising as both teams beaten are having good seasons, in addition they were dumped out of the FA Cup by National League side Barnet, the team we defeated in the last round, but those victories versus Charlton and Accrington, and a recent draw against Sunderland should strike a cautionary note.

Nigel Clough stepped down as boss because of the financial impact Covid 19 had on Albion, and I don’t think I’m wrong when I say I they couldn’t afford to keep him. Former player Jake Buxton is doing his best as the Player Manager, but Albion simply don’t have the cash that some of the others have to try and dig themselves out of trouble. I did hear from a particularly good source in June that Albion were struggling and even at this early stage of the season it looks like the only thing on the agenda is club survival, even if that does mean a dip into League 2.

We have only played Burton twice in our history, losing both times, and on both occasions failing to score despite dominating the possession stats, and of course Scott Fraser was on the Burton side on both occasions.

THE MANAGER – This one is tricky simply because the Wiki page on the Burton manager has not been updated for ages, in fact finding out anything about Burton is hard work. I do know that Jake Buxton was appointed Player/Manager on May 18th 2020 following the resignation of Nigel Clough, but I have no clue if that was made permanent, but he doesn’t appear to be playing, so I can only presume he is the official gaffer.

He was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield and is aged 35.

As a defender he played 434 games scoring 19 goals with teams such as Mansfield Town, Alfreton Town, Burton Albion, Derby County, Wigan Athletic and finally back to Burton Albion where he hung up his boots, or we think he hung up his boots.

His career stats as a manager will be the same as the Burton Albion record, plus a few cup games, hang on let me get a calculator, GAMES 22, WON 2, DRAWN 9, LOST 11, giving him a WIN RATIO of about 10%, which in honesty is about as low as you can get.

BEST INTERNET MATCH ODDS – MK DONS 4/5 DRAW 13/5 BURTON 7/2

SHOOTERS BOOTS – Kane Hemmings & Lucas Atkins with 5 goals.

FAMOUS FAN – Some say he can name every single starting XI from Burton Albion’s inaugural season in 1950/51. All we know is he’s called the Stig of Top Gear fame – and he’s a big Brewers fan.
