IN FOCUS – LINCOLN CITY

For every league game we are going to be looking for those hard to find facts and figures about our next opponents, we kicked this off last week and judging by the numbers it looks to have proved very popular so we are going to make this one of our regular features.

LAST SEASON – The Imps finished last season in 16th place with a record of PLAYED 35, WON 12, DRAWN 6, LOST 17, GF 44 & GA 46 giving then 42 POINTS and a PPG of 1.20.

CURRENT 2020/21 LEAGUE RECORD

Lincoln 2 Oxford United 0

YEAR FORMED – 1884

NICKNAME – The Imps

HOME GROUND – Sincil Bank (Capacity 10,120)

THE MANAGER – Michael Antony Appleton born in Salford; Manchester aged 44.

Lincoln City Boss – Michael Appleton

His youth days were served at none other than Manchester Utd, but he never made the first team, and neither did he during a subsequent loan at Wimbledon. He made appearances at Lincoln City, Grimsby Town, Preston North End and West Brom before a two-year battle with injuries forced him to retire. In total in midfield he made just 194 appearances scoring 15 goals.

As a result of that forced retirement West Brom and Appleton sued the surgeon who was deemed to have ended through negligence his career.  Appleton’s case was successful, and he was awarded £1.5m.

His first taste of management came in 2011 when he was thrown into the hot seat as Caretaker Manager at West Brom. In his career he has also managed Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Oxford United, a spell as Caretaker at Leicester City before taking over at Lincoln in September 2019 on a five-year deal.

His management stats are just above average at GAMES 286, WON 110, DRAWN 77 and LOST 98, giving him a healthy 38.5% WIN RATIO.

PLAYED FOR BOTH – Drewe Broughton, Mustapha Carayol, Luke Howell, Albert Jarrett, Jude Stirling, Adam Watts, and Craig Westcarr, Conor McGrandles, Joe Walsh.

Played for Both – Jude Stirling

FAMOUS MANAGERS – Former manager Danny Cowley was the 41st manager of Lincoln City in their 135-year history, the most well-known to your man in the street supporter being former Leeds legend from the 70’s Allan Clarke, 1960’s Man United player David Herd and dearly departed former England and Watford manager Graham Taylor.

MATCHDAY MASCOT – Poacher the Imp.

FAMOUS FANS – Sheridan (Love her to bits) Smith from 2 Pints, and former golfer Tony Jacklin are the only two I can find, and even then, the links are at best tenuous.
