On Saturday we make the trip down to Devon as we take on Exeter City at St. James’ Park in League One. In preparation for the match, we asked the Exeter City fan Egg (@SwGroundhopper) on Twitter some questions. Many thanks for taking part!
1. Are you happy with Exeter’s start to the season after being promoted from League Two last season?
Very happy with our start, it wasn’t the easiest of starts on paper and to record wins over Wycombe and Port Vale was great, along with decent draws against Lincoln and Accrington Stanley. I don’t think we could have asked for a better start before the season began.
2. What are your thoughts on the Grecian’s transfer window?
It’s been a bit quiet, most of our squad enter the season still under contract which is credit to Matt Taylor and the club for extending our younger players deals. Blackman is a quality signing in goal for us and probably better than most than most fans were hoping for when it became apparent, we needed a keeper.
3. Based on the start of the season, where do you think Exeter will finish at the end of the season?
Based on our start, I don’t see any reason that we couldn’t be aiming for a comfortable mid-table finish. Top half would be great but staying away from the trouble at the bottom would be seen as progress by most supporters.
4. What style of play can the Dons expect from Exeter on Saturday, a high press or tightly knit defence and hit on the break?
We like to get the ball down and play it on the deck, our wing play is our strength along with pressing high-up the pitch. If we score first, then it’ll mean we can play on the counter and break at pace.
5. Will the expectations be to stay up this season, or do you think that Grecians can aim higher up the table?
I think most supporters are realistic in that we probably won’t be chasing a play-off place come the end of the season, but we also won’t be in danger of going down. Mid table is we’ll end up and a club of our size would be a huge achievement.
6. Which Exeter players should we watch out for on Saturday?
Javani Brown really makes us tick. He links up play and brings players into the game along with having an eye for goal. Recently he was called up to the Jamaica squad and his absence really showed in the game against Cheltenham.
7. The Dons have had a rough start to the season, but it looks like they’re picking up their form slightly. Where do you think the Dons will finish at the end of the season?
I’ve been surprised to see the start the Dons have had, you never can tell in League One where a team will finish as it’s normally so close. I’ll plump for a top half finish.
8. If you could have any current Dons player, who would it be?
I’ve always been impressed with Dean Lewington when we have played MK, so wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Grecians shirt.
9. Who or what made you support Exeter City?
I’ve born and bred in Devon and from a football mad family so didn’t really stand much of chance. Started attending games with mates when I was quite young and was hooked from my first game. City really is something that means 101 different things to the people of Exeter and Devon. It’s a club anchored in our community and at the heart of our city.
10. Which game/s are you most looking forward to this season?
That lot down the road in Plymouth – as simple as that.
11. Thank you for participating, it really helps us understand our opponents and what to expect from them. Finally, what do you think the score will be?
Not a problem. I hope you all have a great time at St. James Park, obviously not too much of a good time. I’ll be delighted if the 3 points stay in Devon.
