After the comedy show that was Charles Breakspear on Tuesday night, we move on to Joshua Smith from Bedfordshire for our fixture with Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Being fair to Charlie we must say that we have now won 6 on the bounce with him in charge, so as much as he leaves us scratching our heads at times, we haven’t done bad out of him.
Back to Saturday and Smith was promoted to the EFL from the National League during the 2019/20 season and was soon upgraded to take in Championship games last term as part of the EFL Fast Track of referees.
The last time we had Mr Smith in charge was March 27th, 2021, in our home fixture with Doncaster Rovers. We won 1-0 but can you remember who scored the goal, answer at the bottom of the page.
Last season he reffed just 20 games but assisted as the 4th official or lino at many others. He handed out 58 yellow cards in those 20 games, upgrading that single yellow to a double just once in the season. Just one player saw red in that time and Joshua only awarded 3 pens.
He will be assisted on Saturday by Rob Smith and Sam Lewis on the flags with Adrian Waters performing the 4th official duties.
The answer to the question above is Daniel Harvie whose deflected strike in the 78th minute gave the Dons their 4th consecutive victory moving them up to 12th and 3 points outside the playoffs.
