We have finished our midweek fixtures but there is no reason to take our eye off the ball and keep an eye on the latest battles for promotion and relegation as there are one or two games with huge implications. So kick off your shoes relax on the sofa and we will take you through what happened on Tuesday night.
Shrewsbury 0 Lincoln 1
A training ground move from Lincoln never went as rehearsed but it was eventually recycled and pumped to the far post where Jorge Grant unchallenged headed home from about 2 yards, and that was about the best of the game.
Accrington 3 Portsmouth 3
How many times have I said it, Accrington are the most unpredictable team in League 1. Some loose play in the Pompey midfield was seized upon by Accy, four passes later a cross from the right hand side and Colby Bishop crashed a thumping header into the roof of the net. With seconds to go to half time Accrington gained a free kick in midfield, a hopeful punt to the back post followed , the ball was pulled back and Cameron Burgess was on hand to side foot home. Pompey pulled themselves back into the game early in the second half, Stanley were caught in midfield with the ball, the ball was laid off to Marquis who needed two attempts to beat the keeper for his 17th of the season. 5 minutes later it was parity, Ryan Williams rounding the keeper to score … game on. With the clock going past 90 minutes a hopeful long ball into the box finally landed at Marquis’s feet and once again he made no mistake. Incredibly there was still time for more, and Marquis scored his 3rd goal of the night, sadly for him in his own net, he didn’t know much about it as it ricocheted off him, that could be a vital 2 points knocked off Pompey’s account, as a breathless encounter finished all square.
Sunderland 0 Blackpool 1
A cracking goal broke the deadlock at the Stadium of Light, a corner for Pool on the right hand side eventually fell to Solomon Kaikai outside the box who smashed it into the roof. Both teams remain in the playoff berths.
Burton 5 Fleetwood 2
Today’s meaningless game featured our next Saturday’s opponents Fleetwood Town and recently declared safe Burton Albion, neither team having anything to play for other than pride. The game burst into life just after the half hour, Fleetwood trying to play out got caught on the ball, it was quickly played to Lucas Akins who smashed it in from fully 20 yards out. 4 minutes later it was 2-0, a Joe Powell free kick just outside the box beautifully curled over the wall hitting both posts and going in. Just after Fleetwood got themselves back into the game when Sam Finley rounded the keeper to score after a quick break from a Burton corner. More poor defending by Fleetwood allowed Burton to restore their two goal advantage, they had plenty of challenges to clear the ball, but it finally fell to Thomas Hamer who scored from just inside the box. Kane Hemmings made it a rout 5 minutes from time cutting in from the touchline with defenders in his wake and firing it into the far corner. Jordan Rossiter pulled one back for Fleetwood, but it was just a consolation, so just to rub it in Kane Hemmings went straight up the other end and restored the 3 goal cushion.
Charlton 2 Crewe 2
January loan signing from Preston Jayden Stockley scored the first goal of the night in League 1, some great wing work from Athletic that eventually fell to Gilbey who pulled the ball back for Stockley to score a diving header at the front post, that’s his 7th goal for Charlton….all headers. A beautiful passing move from Crewe and it was all square at the Valley, Owen Dale cutting back inside and firing low into the corner. 7 minutes from time Alex Gilbey put Charlton back in front, glancing a header home from a Forster-Caskey cross. Late goals everywhere tonight and the Valley was no exception when Owen Dale levelled late on to put a dent in Charlton’s promotion push.
AFCW 3 Rochdale 3
Hold the back page, a few minutes before half time a Dale corner on the left hand side somehow sneaked all the way across the six yard box to leave Jake Beesley the easy task to prod home. On the hour Dale doubled their advantage through Gabriel Osho, a long throw from near the corner flag delicately headed in. It was a quick response from AFC as they robbed Dale of the ball in midfield, a quick cross into the box that was headed in by Jack Rudoni. A few minutes later it was all level, a hopeful cross into the box with no apparent danger, keeper and defender bumped into each other and Ollie Palmer couldn’t believe his luck leaving him with the easiest job to score. With the game looking like it was AFC’s, Dale came back to score again, a corner from the right hand side was flicked on and Jimmy Keohane was all alone on the back post to head home. It looked to be Dales night when Joe Pigott fluffed his lines missing a penalty, but It was heartbreak for Dale deep into injury time when Joe Pigott seized on a loose ball to score to take a share of the points.
Peterborough 2 Doncaster 2
In the late kick off Posh got just the start they wanted scoring after 10 minutes, Joe Ward driving into the box dropped his shoulder to beat the defender and fired home. 15 minutes later Posh doubled their lead with a superb move that ended with Sammie Szmodics side footing the ball into the net past two defenders. Doncaster pulled one back shortly before the break, a ball from midfield was played into the box it was laidback and on hand was Fejiri Okenabirhie too fire a shot low into the bottom corner. With the game apparently well in hand for Peterborough early in the second half Doncaster drew level through Taylor Richards, and that’s the way it ended.
