MK Dons progress into the Last 16 of the Papa Johns Trophy thanks to a 3-1 win over League Two side Newport County thanks to goals from Darragh Burns, Matt Dennis & Will Grigg. The key moments from the match below!πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

MATCH REPORT

1’ – KICK OFF.

7’ – The Dons have an early opportunity as they have a shot from Conor Grant saved by Townsend.

8’ – Seconds later Devoy sets Grant away and almost gets through on goal but for a superb challenge from their defender to clear away the danger.

15’ – Adam Lewis with the best chance of the game as has a looping ball over the top of the Dons defence falls perfectly with his goal at his mercy, but somehow he puts it wide.

16’ – MK Dons lose the ball in their half and Omar Bogle finds the ball in the box and hits his shot towards goal but Cumming somehow palms it inches wide of his left hand upright.

23’ – After a flurry of chances for the visitors, Matt Dennis advances forward and squirms the ball out to Barry who balloons an effort well over the top.

27’ – GOAL – 1-0 – Breakthrough as the Dons continue to pile a bit of pressure on Newport, they end up with a corner which is headed by Tucker towards goal, and Darragh Burns was there to tap home past the keeper before he could claim.

34’ – The first booking of the game goes to Newport’s Demetriou after a smart foul on Burns as he looked to be advancing in a promising attack.

40’ – Newport gave their first decent chance since conceding as Bowen unleashes a shot from distance but O’Hora to block and the ball to flick off Moriah-Welsh and out for a goalkick.

43’ – Newport break the down the left side of Dons’ defence once again and the ball is delivered to the back post for Adam Lewis, and once again, the ball is hit off target.

HALF TIME – MK Dons 1-0 Newport County

47’ – Newport have a great chance to level early on in the second half but Omar Bogle blasts well over the top from close range.

53’ – Dennis does very well to win the ball deep in Newport territory but the ball squirms away out of his reach before he can pull thr trigger.

59’ – GOAL – 2-0 – The Dons extend their lead as Matt Dennis gets his reward after a shot from Oyegoke takes a deflection and the ball rolls to Dennis at an acute angle who unleashes a thunderous shot at the keeper who is unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

61’ – Dennis has a great chance to dounle his tally, as he leaps highest to the ball in the box but he heads inches wide.

65’ Holland puts in a teasing ball to the back post towards substitute Will Grigg, but the ball is just out of his reach as Townsend does superbly well to clear away a certain goal.

78’ – GOAL – 3-0 – Will Grigg gets his goal as he’s played through on goal and chips the onrushing Townsend to make it three!!

80’ – The Dons are flexing as Oyegoke has a superb solo run before he forces Townsend into a great save to prevent goal number 4.

81’ – McEachran puts in a lovely teasing ball to the back post, but Will Grigg just can’t quite get on the end of it.

85’ – GOAL – 3-1 – Newport get a consolation as Thierry Nevers glances a header into the far post past Cumming.

89’ – MK Dons work the ball well through to Dan  Kemp but he has an effort skew wide of the far post.

90’ – 5 Minutes of Addtional time, not too sure why?

FULL TIME – MK Dons 3-1 Newport County

Next up for the Dons is their second round FA Cup tie down at Fratton Park as they take on Portsmouth for a place in the 3rd round.
