Trash Talk The Saddlers

by Alfie Marlborough

Alfie has just transcended into superstar status with this one. The MKDSA Media team doubted he’d pull this one off, but he dug deep and with the help of Jon Harries the rest of the team now accept we are not worthy. Enjoy the read as Alfie questions a Saddlers fan, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals from Swifty their Mascot!

Are you content with the Saddlers’ start  to the season?

We always expected a slow start to this season with the amount of injuries, the opening day victory over Hartlepool gave many false hope but I believe we will be much better come the second half of the season.

With Walsall’s hopes of progression to the knockout stages are looking slim at the moment and requires a big goal swing on top of results to go your way, do you expect Michael Flynn to field a much weakened side?

We don’t fair well in cup competitions. Apart from getting to Wembley in the JPT in 2015 we are terrible with cup runs. You will have to go back to the 90’s to see a Walsall regularly going far in the cup. We just learn to live with our mediocre Cup efforts.

Which players do you expect to cause problems for the Dons on Tuesday night?

Danny Johnson. He is the only player that will cause real problems. He doesn’t do much with the ball but give him half a chance and he will punish you.

Are you happy with Walsall’s transfer activity from the summer and which signings have impressed you the most so far?

When Trivela LLC purchased the club during the summer many were saying we are rich, however Ben Boycott stated from the off this will be an incremental change. Slowly but surely we will come good. Seventeen new players show the manager has been backed, don’t expect them all to get overnight

Who or What made you support Walsall?

My great grandad followed Walsall in and out of the first and Second World War. My grandad then followed Walsall either side of the Korean War, then my dad followed those. I went to my first Walsall game when I was four years old and haven’t looked back since.

What style of play can we expect to see from Walsall on Tuesday night?

We are resolute and tough to break down. Our football isn’t very pretty but we will expect to expose on the counter attack and try and come away with a 1-0 win.

If you could have any Dons player, who would it be?

We were linked in the summer but most would take Will Grigg back in a heartbeat. He started his career with the saddlers and many expect him to end it here.

What is your most memorable moment supporting the Sadlers?

Most memorable Walsall moment? Under Sir Ray Graydon there were a few but to win promotion after being certainties for relegation has to be the best moment following Walsall. We beat Wigan, Preston and Man City to promotion that year.

Which Walsall games are you most look forward to this season?

If I’m honest none. League 2 is a terrible league to be in and we need to be out of it fairly quickly.

The Dons have had a poor start to the season considering the highs that were achieved last season, where do you think the Dons will finish in League One this year?

I’m honestly surprised at the Dons start to League 1. I genuinely thought they’d be top six this season. Nothing is won or lost in October so I’d say Dons would surely be happy with mid table this season.

Since being relegated to League Two, Walsall have struggled to mount any potential play-off pushes and seem to be stuck around mid-table. Do you think the Saddlers will be able to contend any time soon and maybe get back into League One?

We need to. Not being big headed but our structure, our fanbase and our stadium are easily League 1 standard. We have had a few years of mismanagement from the hierarchy but with Micky Flynn I believe he’s the man to get us back into League 1.

Thank you for participating, it really helps us get a stronger understanding of the opposition! Finally, what do you think the score will be?

We are out the competition so I expect to field a weaker side which will see the Dons run out easy winners, 0-2.
