DONS 1 SUTTON UTD 0

By Alfie Marlborough

All the action from the Dons’ victory over Sutton to secure not only their first win of the season and a spot in tomorrow night’s round 2 draw.

Team Line-ups:

The Dons; Cumming, Tucker, O’Hora, Robson, Grant, Kemp, Burns, Lawrence, Devoy, Dennis, Jules

Sutton United; Rose, Rowe, John, Boldewijn, Smith, Bugiel, Eastmond, Neufville, Kizzi, Milsom, Wilson

’ Sutton United kick us off here under the lights at Stadium MK.

’ Conor Grant plays a brilliant ball into the box which lands at the feet of Darragh Burns who is unable to make a strong connection with the ball. Jules then puts in a ball which is met by Matt Dennis’ head but ends up well over.

’ The Dons are dominating early on here as Dan Kemp puts in an inviting ball which just misses Dennis.

’ Josh Neufville drives forwards into the Dons’ box but O’Hora does very well to put the midfielder off and let’s it run out for a goal kick.

’ Dennis showing great strength to get past several defenders and then passes to Kemp who is open. His shot is deflected over.

’ Darragh Burns does well to get away from his man and cuts in on his right. His shot from about 20 yards out isn’t kept down and goes over.

’ Burns glides through the Sutton midfield with ease but is crowded out when he reaches the box. Burns is running the show so far!

’ Enzo Boldewijn’s shot forces Jamie Cumming into a diving save. He saves comfortably.

’ Dennis looking lively here. More good footwork from the forward allows him to get a shot off which is then blocked before having another chance which is cleared by Sutton.

’ Cumming quickly off his line to head clear after a decent ball is played over the top.

’ Sutton win a cheap free kick 30 yards out. Kizzi is left open at the back post but heads straight towards Cumming who collects.

’ Zak Jules goes down and needs treatment. He will be okay to continue for now.

’ Sloppy at the back from Dons. A poor pass ends up with Smith. His shot doesn’t trouble Cumming.

’ Tucker makes an exceptional block to deny an effort from Boldewijn. Sutton slowly getting stronger as the first half goes on.

’ GOAL! Conor Grant grabs the Dons’ first goal of the season with a brilliant finish. Devoy plays a great ball to the feet of Grant who does excellent to take the ball away from his man and rifles past Rose in goal. Dons Lead!

’ Dennis travels from his own half to the penalty area with the ball. He shifts it on to his left foot but scuffs his shot which rolls through to Rose.

+2’ Sutton make their first change of the evening as Coby Rowe goes down injured and is replaced by Jonathan Barden.

HALF-TIME: It’s been all Dons so far and go in at the break with a deserved 1-0 lead thanks to a Conor Grant goal. Debutant Dawson Devoy has been lively so far and has been controlling the midfield.

’ Matt Dennis gets us underway for the second half with the Dons shooting towards an empty cowshed.

’ A stop in play as the Sprinklers make a brief appearance!

’ Dan Kemp plays a good ball through to Dennis who tries to shift it onto his right but fails to get a shot away.

’ A looping cross from Lawrence meets the head of Darragh Burns whose header goes just wide.

’ As per, Mr. Breakspear having a shocker tonight getting several calls wrong yet again.

’ Devoy drives forward before passing to Kemp who then blazes over into the Cowshed.

’ Double change for Sutton at the hour mark as both Craig Eastmond and Donavon Wilson make way for Harry Beautyman and Kylian Kouassi.

’ Matt Dennis goes down after taking a shot. He seems ok but is taken off and replaced by Louie Barry. A good performance from the striker!

’ Another chance for the Dons as Devoy tees up Grant who drags his shot wide from just outside the area.

’ Zak Jules produces a crucial tackle on the edge of the box. The Dons go down the other end, but Burns’ shot doesn’t trouble Rose who gets down quickly enough to save it.

’ Cumming parries away a decent effort from Alistair Smith. Shouts for a penalty as a Sutton player goes down. Waved away by the referee.

’ Kizzi hits a shot wide from the edge of the D. Cumming is untroubled.

’ Robson is robbed off the ball in the middle of the park. Beautyman tries from the edge but O’Hora gets his body in the way of it.

’ Another double change from The U’s as Luke Gambin and Kwame Thomas replace Enzio Boldewijn and Omar Bugiel.

’ Second change of the evening for the Dons as Ethan Robson makes way for Matt Smith. Ethan Robson has been excellent tonight.

’ Louie Barry gets a shot off which stings the gloves of Rose. Should probably do better.

’ A magnificent ball from Matt Smith to Darragh Burns who’s shot ends up in the arms of Rose.

’ Dan Kemp makes way for Brooklyn Ilunga with minutes to play.

’ Sutton getting into the game in the closing stages. Corner to the visitors which finds a Sutton player but is eventually cleared by the Dons. We head into Four minutes of additional time…

+2’ Conor Grant is named man of the match tonight. He has been brilliant tonight!

+5’ A glorious chance for Gambin in the final moments as he is found open but blazes over the bar from close range.

FULL-TIME: Dons ease their way into Round 2 of the cup with a 1-0 win against Sutton United despite some late pressure from the U’s.

Next up, we return to League action as we visit Portman Road to take on Ipswich Town as we look for our first league points of the season.
